Fishing Report (Updated 9.2.2010)

Trout: Excellent.  Haddrell’s Point (843-881-3644) reports that fantastic numbers of small to medium sized trout are being caught on a daily basis.  Fish live shrimp under a popping cork or DOA shrimp around shell rakes in 3-5 feet of water.  Quality trout have reported caught on “walk the dog” type lures early in the morning.

Tarpon: Good to very good. Haddrell’s Point reports that tarpon are still here in full force, with great numbers being reported from the North Edisto inlet, Bull’s Bay, and the Charleston Jetties. Use large mullet or menhaden rigged on a long 80 pound leader.

Spottail Bass: Good to very good.  Haddrell’s Point reports that redfish continue to feed heavily, and they can be found all over the estuaries right now.  Good tailing action in the grass on high tides is reported; try throwing a ZMAN jerkshad or Gulp! shrimp at tailing fish. On moving tides the mouths of feeder creeks are good places to look, and live bait under rattling floats will catch fish.  There is also a very good bite around structure like docks and rockpiles.  Carolina rigs baited with mullet, mud minnows or shrimp are good bets for fishing around structure.   Some bull reds are also being caught in the surf, with the best bite on chunks of mullet.

Flounder: Good.  Haddrell’s Point continues to report an above-average flounder bite in inlets and creek mouths.  Mud minnows and finger mullet fished on the bottom are the baits of choice.

Folly Beach Pier (843-588-3474) reports that pier fishing has slowed, and the tarpon have left.  A few sharks, whiting, bluefish and sheepshead have been caught.

Offshore: Haddrell’s Point reports a strong wahoo bite in 130-150 feet of water, especially for big fish.  Some sailfish and nice dolphin have also been caught.  In 80-100 feet of water some quality vermillion snapper, black sea bass, and triggerfish have also been caught, as well as some snowy grouper in 160-250 feet.
